How do you pronounce "St. Gaudens"?

How do you pronounce "St. Gaudens"? Is it Saint "Gow-dens" or Saint "Gaw-dens"? How did Augustus St. Gaudens pronounce it?

I've heard he was born in Dublin, Eire, but the name certainly sounds French.

it would probably be about half way between them, leaning towards the oe as in toe kind of sound.

Say gah and then oo as in spook really, really fast. Blur it together. Dipthongs are vowel combination sounds that have been blended together. For some of them, the vowels would have been pronounced seperately.

Re: How do you pronounce "St. Gaudens"?

In his autobiography, he states that his name is pronounced: Gau as in gaudy, ens as in enslave. Also, there was to be no hyphen in the name. However, Augustus himself signed his name several different ways, sometimes using a hyphen and sometimes abbreviating the word saint. While Augustus mainly used Saint Gaudens, his son Homer preferred to use the hyphen, and spell out the word "Saint". Augustus' brother, Louis, and nephew, Paul, always used St. Gaudens.

Infidel has it correct, I think.
There is a company under the St Gaudens name that manufactures metal art tile and knobs for walls and floors. His daughter is involved at some level and pronounced it that way when she introduced herself to our rep.
St. Gaw-denz accent on the Gaw
